New Poll: 56% of U.S. Voters Support Legalizing Marijuana

A new poll from Rasmussen shows that marijuana legalization continues to be a mainstream, majority position among U.S. voters.  The poll finds that 56% of voters support legalization, with just 36% opposed.
LEAP's Neill Franklin, a retired Baltimore narcotics cop, had this reaction:

"Polling now consistently shows that more voters support legalizing and regulating marijuana than support continuing a failed prohibition approach. Yet far too many politicians continue to act as if marijuana policy reform is some dangerous third rail they dare not touch. If the trends in public opinion continue in the direction they are going, the day is not far away when supporting a prohibition system that causes so much crime, violence and corruption is going to be seen as a serious political liability for those seeking support from younger and independent voters. Savvy forward-looking politicians are already beginning to see which way the wind is blowing."
Previously, Gallup found legalization leading 50%-46%.

Sure, prohibition causes a lot of crime, violence, and corruption. However, it guarantees lots of votes for law-and-order types (Republicans, mostly) and pro-union types (Democrats). That's why waging this failed drug war will take a long, long time to fix.

  2. It’s my opinion that with concerted effort from key players and those in the know, we could end prohibition and replace it with an intelligent regulatory system in one week. However, given the craziness, conflict of interest (i.e. doctors not making $ off a plant vs. their stocks in pharma, misc. leos, etc…), and the trafficking organization operatives that have infiltrated govt., the press, the media, PTA’s, etc… it could take a whole month once we have the key players and those in the know working on it.

I don’t really think it will take a “long, long time” for a number of reasons. However, it’s not sure what you mean by “long, long;” two, three, or more decades?

I understand it’s taken a very long time already, don’t get me wrong. But because Prohibition is intrinsically flawed on so many levels, it is its own undoing. However, this does not mean we just sit back and wait for it to end on its own, we have to inform others on the multitude of harms it causes, vote people in and vote people out based on their stance and work in Prohibition.

I think the two principle reasons prohibition destroys itself are evident today. 1) due to prohibition creating such a lucrative market, it has ensured drugs have spread far and wide, far more than if they had some simple regulations placed on them instead of outright prohibition. 2) is that we are past broke and the money we spend on Prohibition only exacerbates the problem so it costs even more to enforce it.

  3. With regards to #1, this causes more people to try marijuana. And I feel sure that nearly 99% of them say, “that’s it? This stuff isn’t worth throwing people in prison for, destroying other countries for, or driving ourselves broke and creating debt for dozens of generations to come!”

Reason #2 is visible to those who have tried cannabis and those who haven’t. And there are plenty of people who have not used it but know others who have or do and see right through the Prohibitionists’ evil lies. Lies that will cause them to gnash their teeth come Judgement Day. They will also gnash their teeth in agony because they’ve kept pain medicine from so many people who needed it. Their own lies fly back in their bodies through their mouths and how they’ve treated others is how they will be treated (plus some).

It’s really quite obvious Gil K., Barack O., Michelle L., John W., Paul C., etc…You should read the Bible sometime. Better sooner rather than later.

  4. I'm happy that a majority of Americans now support legalizing marijuana, but I am concerned about why they might now be supporting legalization.
People used to believe the propaganda from the Federal government about marijuana. Now more people don't view it as dangerous at all.
But whether or not marijuana is dangerous isn't really the point.
Adults have the right to make choices, good or bad, about their lives.
Children should be protected from bad choices as much as possible.
When we legalize and regulate drugs we are protecting the choices of adults and children from themselves. Drugs should be legalized not because they are harmless, but because they are potentially harmful and should be properly regulated and controlled.

During a House Judiciary Subcommittee hearing on Wednesday, Drug Enforcement Administrator Michele Leonhart repeatedly refused to admit that anything was more addictive or harmful than marijuana.

Democratic Rep. Jared Polis of Colorado pressed Leonhart on whether illegal drugs like methamphetamine and crack, as well as legal prescription drugs, caused greater harm to public health compared to marijuana. But within a three minute time-span, Leonhart dodged his questions eleven times.

“Is crack worse for a person than marijuana?” Polis, who has called for an end the prohibition on marijuana, asked.

“I believe all illegal drugs are bad,” Leonhart responded.

  6. International Boycott Of The Arabic Drug Empire
    By Henry Massingale

A long time ago I entered into a adventure, and I had no idea where it was to go....

I have seen this country end up in a War in Afghan, at the same time Oxy Heroin has killed around 1.3 Million People from Canada to America while we fight this war....
It has been shared and now I support the New York Times and CBS News reports that our Men and Women were giver Orders to protect the Poppy Fields. 3 American Solders were killed in action...
At the same time I found out that Afghan Heroin now grows in Mexico. A United Drug Empire has moved Against the American People.
It is seen in a different view of the cause of 9/11..at first I thought this to be a lie, that our Government made a drug deal with Bin laden and his drug lords, supported with American Tax dollars...
If I had not seen the photos of the Heroin plants in Mexico, and Big Pharmaceutical Companies there, I would of dismissed this Internet Story...
Now we have around 30,000 to 100,000 Mexican and and Cartel Drug Lords on the Border and in America....this is a fact...because President Obama sent around 7000 more troops to the Border.
A Clear and Present Danger is shown, and all I have to say is thank you very much, President Bush and President Obama...
I have given my word to our Military I will never stand down...
